Aircraft Story

The Grunau Baby glider was developed in Germany in 1931 in Edmund Schneider's design office. The aim was to create a simple, affordable, yet capable glider suitable for pilot training as well as for sport and performance flying.

Thanks to its wooden structure covered with canvas and its excellent flight characteristics, the Grunau Baby quickly became popular not only in Germany but also in other European countries. By the beginning of World War II, more than 6,000 units had been produced in a number of versions (Baby I, II, IIa, IIb) and also under license abroad.

The Grunau Baby became the basic type of glider used for training and contributed significantly to the popularization of unpowered flight among the general public.
